On the island of Kauai, orphaned teenager Nani Pelekai struggles to take care of her rambunctious younger sister and finds solace in the Hawaiian concept of ohana. When she hears her sister praying for a friend, Nani takes a liking to a mischievous extraterrestrial creature who impersonates a dog named 626 and adopts him as her pet. Originally engineered to cause chaos and destruction, Stitch soon discovers the meaning of true love and responsibility through his bond with Nani and begins to reconsider his destructive purpose.

Meanwhile, social worker Cobra Bubbles arrives to examine the siblings’ living conditions, and he threatens to put Nani in foster care if she cannot teach Stitch to be a “model citizen”. After an argument with Nani, Jumba and Pleakley attempt to capture Stitch covertly while he is at the restaurant where Nani works; his antics result in them accidentally pulling him underwater.
