What is a Youtube Live Stream?

A youtube live stream is a video that can be broadcast online in real time, a bit like live TV. It requires an internet enabled device to broadcast and to view, for example a smart phone or tablet. Some platforms, like Facebook Live, Instagram Live Stories, Twitch TV (used by gamers), House Party and TikTok, specialise in this type of video streaming.

Live streams can be private and may only be watched by people who are invited. This can be useful for online meetings, or talking with friends and family. It can also be used to broadcast special events, such as graduation ceremonies, for those who cannot attend in person.

Some live streams are open to the public and might be viewed by hundreds, or even thousands of people. This can give children and young people an opportunity to engage with their favourite content creators and celebrities, but it could also put them at risk. For example, they might be exposed to inappropriate content, or offensive comments, or they could be contacted by people who are trying to exploit them, for example by trying to get them to engage in sexual activity or to share private information.

It’s important to talk with your child about the risks of viewing or creating live streams and to ensure they understand how to stay safe. Make sure they know where to go for support and how to report any concerns. youtube live stream
