Rhinoplasty – What You Need to Know

Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that can change the size and shape of your nose. It also can correct nasal breathing problems caused by a deviated septum.

Rhinoplasties have been shown to improve your quality of life. In some cases, the changes are very slight and can make a big difference in your appearance. The goal is to get a nose that looks natural and fits your face, making it look more harmonious with other facial features. You may also decide to have rhinoplasty surgery if you have had a nose injury or birth defect.

Before your surgery, you will need to discuss your goals and medical history with your surgeon. You should tell your doctor about any previous surgeries, nasal blockages and medications you take. If you have any bleeding disorders, you may not be a good candidate for rhinoplasty.

You will have a physical exam to see how your nose is shaped and to find out what needs to be done. X-rays and photographs of your face and nose will be taken. These help the doctor determine if you have enough skin and cartilage to achieve your desired results.

Rhinoplasty is often performed in combination with other procedures such as a chin implant to balance the facial proportions. Most rhinoplasty surgeries are closed (closed approach). You will go home with a small plastic splint that you wear for one or two weeks. Cotton gauze (packing) is placed inside your nose to minimize swelling. This will be removed according to the surgeon’s instructions. Rhinoplasty
